The objective study was explore role small fiber polyneuropathy (SFPN) as a potential nexus between IC/BPS syndromes. METHODS: Fifty-one women undergoing therapeutic hydrodistention (HOD) provided skin biopsy from distal calf. Processed tissue stained protein gene product (PGP) 9.5, marker for intraepidermal nerve fibers (IENF), SFPN (+/-) status determined comparing linear IENF density (fibers/mm2; Figure 1) normative reference values. Co-occurring CPP, FM, VD) patient report. RESULTS: Approximately quarter (13/51; 25.49%) in cohort were SFPN+. Average age (years) SFPN+ patients 40.92 versus 48.73 without (SFPN-). Among patients, widespread 76.92% (10/13), 46.15% (6/13), 38.46% (5/13) (VD), respectively. SFPN- group, 42.10% (16/38), 36.84% (14/38), 15.79% (6/38) reported VD, respectively (Table 1). CONCLUSIONS: Contrary range values that show decreases age, were, on average, almost 8 years younger than their counterparts. higher prevalence pain, fibromyalgia, vulvodynia. There high concordance co-occurrence CPP (∼77%), suggesting possible etiological generalized descriptor. Further studies determine mechanisms which may contribute are warranted. Evidence of small-fiber polyneuropathy in unexplained, juvenile-onset, widespread pain syndromes.
OBJECTIVE We tested the hypothesis that acquired small-fiber polyneuropathy (SFPN), previously uncharacterized in children, contributes to unexplained pediatric widespread pain syndromes. METHODS Forty-one consecutive patients evaluated for unexplained widespread pain beginning before age 21 had medical records comprehensively analyzed regarding objective diagnostic testing for SFPN (neurodia...
متن کاملMast cell activation syndrome in pain syndromes bladder pain syndrome/interstitial cystitis and vulvodynia
In the short article by Prof. Ratner on mast cell activation syndrome and its overlooked or dismissed possible contribution to bladder pain syndrome/interstitial cystitis (BPS/IC) (1), the author outlines that increased numbers of activated mast cells (mast cell activation syndrome) may play a role in the development of painful BPS/IC. This association has been long recognized by the European S...
متن کاملSmall-fiber polyneuropathy (SFPN), a common underlying diagnosis in syndromes involving unexplained chronic pain and multi-system symptoms
Background Syndromes involving unexplained chronic widespread pain (CWP) and multi-system symptoms are common, with 15% prevalence for fibromyalgia alone. They more often affect females and cause disability and high costs [1-3]. Other common syndromes include chronic fatigue, seronegative Lyme, and Gulf War Illness. Fragmentary syndromes include TMJD, POTS, CRPS, irritable bowel). These syndrom...
متن کاملBladder Pain Syndrome/Interstitial cystitis:
Background BPS/IC is a chronic syndrome with bladder pain, divided into two main types: one with so called Hunner`s lesions (classic type) and one without (nonulcer type). In the recently presented ESSIC classification system the classic type, in focus of the present work, has the designation Type 3C BPS/IC. Symptoms are characterized by bladder pain, urgency, frequency and nocturia. The aetiol...
